Among its many properties is its ability to whiten the skin because of its inhibitory action against the synthesis of tyrosine, the precursor of melanin. In the fight against the effects of aging, vitamin C also interferes with the maintenance of optimal collagen density in the dermis: biochemical studies have shown that it acts as a constituent of lysine and proline hydroxylases, two key enzymes in collagen biosynthesis.
